CORY Sagar got off to a winning start as a professional last week and Callum Simpson says he will do his best to get his fellow Barnsley fighter on the undercard at Oakwell in the summer.
Super-middleweight Sagar, who is a bricklayer from Worsbrough Common, was handed a 40-36 verdict against Londoner Robbie Chapman at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on Saturday night.
The 20-year-old came through at Barnsley Star ABC, under his grandfather John Sagar, who also trained British champion Simpson at the same gym. Simpson, who is due to fight for the European title on June 7, told the Chronicle: “Cory is from my old gym and had a great performance on his debut. His granddad John Sagar used to train me for many years. I have spoken to them and BOXXER about trying to get him on the bill.
“It would be great for John to see me win the European title and his grandson to fight at Oakwell. We will try to pull it off.
“I want to bring up other boxers from Barnsley, give them a platform and make their dreams come true as well.”
Cory added: “It would be amazing to fight at Oakwell in my second fight. I was a season ticket holder for a few years. Callum has mentioned it to me.
“It’s a good storyline. My granddad trained us both.
“There are a lot of connections.”
On his win, Sagar said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better debut. Everyone was happy.
“I took my time and didn’t make any stupid mistakes. My opponent was running a lot and I didn’t give him a chance. It’s given me a lot of confidence because I was nervous.”
