A look at the final eight games in Barnsley's season.

Wigan, A, Saturday

March has so far seen Barnsley collect four points from five games, with a 4-3 win over Lincoln on the first followed by three losses then the draw with Cambridge.

No team in the division has won more away games than Barnsley’s ten this season.

But their eight away losses on the road is more than in their last three League One seasons while they have been beaten in five of their seven away games in 2025.

This game is, in theory, the easiest of the remaining away fixtures as Wigan are 18th.

Exeter City, H, Tuesday

The fixture list is such that Barnsley now have, in theory, a much kinder run-in at home than away so should be able to balance out the bizarre difference between their form at Oakwell and on the road. But Saturday’s draw with Cambridge shows that winning any game at home is incredibly difficult for this Reds squad.

Exeter, like Wigan, are in the bottom third of the table but unlikely to be caught by the bottom four.

This will be the 40-game mark and the only midweek evening fixture left in the Reds season.

Birmingham City, A, April 5

The Blues could secure promotion in this game.

If they win both their matches before then and teams below slip up, a victory over the Reds could be enough to secure a return to the Championship with six games left.

City spent more than £35million this season including a reported £15million on Jay Stansfield – unprecedented numbers in the third tier.

Unsurprisingly they look set to win the title and potentially break the EFL record for highest points tally. Conor Hourihane might get some stick in the dugout as a former Aston Villa player. City are unbeaten at home, winning the last eight.

Bolton, H, April 12

Barnsley arguably haven’t recovered from this fixture in March last season when they were 2-0 up and set to go second but drew 2-2 with an 98th-minute leveller.

They have taken 25 points from 24 home games since while sliding almost out of the play-offs last season and into mid-table this campaign.

A third successive meeting in the play-off semi-final between these two clubs looked unlikely all season, but firstly because Bolton were off the pace until sacking Ian Evatt and replacing him with Steven Schumacher. They are currently a point and place outside the top six.

Leyton Orient, A, April 18

Barnsley will surely want revenge on Good Friday for the humiliating 4-0 loss to the Os just before Christmas. Richie Wellens – who was linked to the Reds last summer – has had an up and down season with the London club.

They were in the relegation zone after 15 games then in the top six after 30 having won 12 of 15. But then they lost five in a row and were five points off the play-offs going into last night’s game with Stevenage.

Peterborough, H, April 21

While Barnsley’s season has been disappointing, it has been even worse for Posh who had also lost in the play-offs in the previous two years. They looked in real relegation danger for much of the campaign but have pulled clear with a seven-game unbeaten run including four wins.

Their games have brought the most goals in the division, while they are the only club to keep fewer clean sheets than Barnsley. This match is on Easter Monday, the same date on which Peterborough won 2-0 in 2022 to essentially relegate the Reds from the Championship.

Shrewsbury, H, April 26

In the last two seasons, Barnsley have signed off for their home games while still in contention in the play-offs. That is not set to be the case this time, but the tone of the send-off will be dictated at least partly by performances and results in the next few weeks. They will just be hoping that there have been a series of wins, especially at Oakwell, which generates some positivity.

The Shrews may well be relegated by then as they are currently bottom and 14 points adrift while Gareth Ainsworth has left for Gillingham.

Reading, A, May 3

Barnsley are highly unlikely to have anything to play for when they travel down to Berkshire for the final game of the season.

But the Royals could well still be in with a chance. Noel Hunt’s side are currently two points off the top six and on a ten-game unbeaten run with a fairly favourable run-in.

By this stage, Barnsley could be blooding more youngsters while speculation may be rife about the retained list and the new head coach.
