Barnsley's 1-0 win at Rotherham was their 5,000th league match. Here we look back at the other milestone games in the club's history.
1,000: Barnsley 3, Blackpool 1 – September 8, 1928
The club had been running for more than four decades but smaller leagues and the First World War meant they only reached their 1,000th league game at this point. Barnsley recovered from conceding an early goal to net through Mears and Eaton.
2,000: Stoke City 2, Barnsley 1 – February 28, 1959
The Reds were midway though a 16-game winless run which would see them finish bottom of the second tier. Prolific striker Lol Chappell put the visitors in front but Stoke scored twice in a minute just before half-time.
3,000: Barnsley 2, Fulham 2 – November 29, 1980
Norman Hunter’s promotion-bound side – including the likes of Joe Joyce, Mick McCarthy and Trevor Aylott – earned a battling point on a snow-covered pitch. Fulham went 2-0 up after 23 minutes but Mike Lester replied and, even though Glyn Riley was sent off in the second half, Ian Banks levelled for the ten men.
4,000: Barnsley 1, Crewe Alexandra 2 – April 21, 2003
The Reds were close to a second successive relegation down to the fourth tier but saved five days later by a late Isaiah Rankine winner at Brentford. Under Peter Doyle’s ownership having previously gone into administration, they were booed off after this Easter Monday loss. Glyn Hodges’ Barnsley took the lead when Mike Sheron’s cross hit the post then was fumbled in by goalkeeper Clayton Ince but Neil Sorvel levelled a minute later with a superb long-range strike before Rob Hulse won it.
