BARNSLEY’S interim head coach Conor Hourihane said there wasn’t any quality in his side’s 2-1 loss to Mansfield this afternoon.

The Reds went behind in the first half as Caylan Vickers fired past Jackson Smith in the Barnsley net.

Josh Benson levelled in the second half before Deji Oshilaja won the game in the last minute.

It was Hourihane’s first game in charge of the Reds.

He went over to the Barnsley fans before the first whistle to applause from the Reds’ faithful.

He said : “I enjoyed before the game.

“The last two days have been brilliant - the lads have been top class.

“The reaction around the building and their application has been really first class.

“In terms of the game I thought it was really poor.

“I don’t think there was any quality throughout it.

“It was a game of ‘do the ugly stuff, do the basics’ and then try and build off the foundation.

“The one phase of play where we keep the ball we end up scoring.

“Overall it was just a poor game if I’m being honest and I don’t think our lads were too good either.”

Barnsley were on top for five minutes after the equaliser but they weren’t able to capitalise and ended up losing the game.

Conor added: “We scored and I thought like ‘come on let’s go’.

“But we never really built the momentum.

“We had one or two little phases, but we just didn’t have enough quality on the ball.

“It’s disappointing, especially the late goal for a group that’s had a lot going on this week.

“We’ve got to go again on Monday and get ready for Cambridge.”

The Reds have been going through somewhat of an injury crisis in recent weeks.

Smith was taken off after the first goal and replaced by Kieren Flavell.

He is Barnsley’s fifth goalkeeper this season, with Gabriel Slonina, Ben Killip and Joe Gauci also playing between the sticks.

Conor added: “It’s something to do with his hamstring.

“It’s real unfortunate, we’ve had no luck with goalkeepers this year.

“But to be fair to Flav he came in and did really well.

“What the situation is with Jackson I’m not sure, it’s too early to tell.

“But it doesn’t look brilliant for him so you’d imagine he’ll be struggling for the next couple of weeks at least.”

Marc Roberts was also taken off at half time and replaced by Connor Barratt.

Conor said: “Robbo was struggling with a bang to the head - I think that was before the goal.

“It was really early on.

“He tried to shake it off but couldn’t.

“He was a bit dizzy and stuff like that so that’s why Robbo came off.”
