Barnsley are winless in six and seven points off the play-offs after losing a lead in a 2-1 home defeat to Michael Duff’s Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Jon Russell opened the scoring with a superb goal against his old club but the visitors netted twice in three minutes either side of the hour-mark.

The Reds were easily second best after an excellent first 20 minutes and have collected a point from their last six matches.

There was no Luca Connell, due to injury, or Adam Phillips, because his partner was due to give birth imminently, in Barnsley’s squad with Neil Farrugia and Stephen Humphrys coming into the 11. New signing Jonathan Lewis was on the bench. The Reds played 3-4-3 with Humphrys and Davis Keillor-Dunn either side of striker Clement Rodrigues who made his home debut.

Rodrigues was played into space in the box by Humphrys in the fourth minute after good work by Donovan Pines and Russell, but hesitated when he should have shot and tried to back heel a pass which was cut out.

Kelechi Nwakali then picked out Keillor-Dunn who cut in from the right wing and had a shot from just inside the box which was deflected and well-saved by the leg of goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

Barnsley took the lead in the 14th minute when, after Huddersfield looked to break having caught Nwakali on the ball, Russell picked up possession in his half then drove to the edge of the Huddersfield box before finding the bottom right corner. It was a fantastic goal by the former Terriers man, and his sixth of the season.

Huddersfield were struggling at that point and losing the ball regularly near their goal, with Rodrigues winning it often. Keillor-Dunn got behind the defence but overhit a pass which could have put Russell through then, minutes later, Corey O’Keeffe shot over from just outside the box.

Huddersfield then were slightly on top for the rest of the half. Callum Marshall saw a shot blocked from a Dion Charles cross before Tawanda Chirewa shot over in the box after being put through by Marshall. Farrugia made a superb saving tackle when Ben Wiles looked set to fire in from a Chirewa cross after sloppy defending on the left of the box. Joe Gauci easily saved a Marshall from the edge of the box and Chirewa shot just wide from 25 yards.

Marshall’s good pass then put Charles clean through and he should have levelled but he overran it and Gauci gathered.

After the break, Gauci easily held Herbie Kane’s 30-yard effort then Marshall blasted across goal from a tight angle and Gauci eventually pounced on the ball after a scramble in the goalmouth.

Half-time substitute Josh Koroma looked certain to level on 58 minutes but his close-range header from Marshall’s left-wing cross bounced across goal and just wide.

Koroma did level seconds later as Huddersfield counter-attacked from a Barnsley attacking free-kick. O’Keeffe’s passed free-kick was straight to a Huddersfield man, amid calls for a foul on Humphrys, and Lasse Sorensen put Koroma behind the defence who he ran away from and finished well.

Two minutes later, Wiles’ free-kick from the left was allowed to creep all the away into the bottom right corner.

Very little happened for the next 20 minutes, with Lewis coming on for his debut and the Reds changing to 4-3-3. Josh Earl cut past a player in the box but his shot from a wide angle was easily saved.

Wiles was then gifted by the ball by Humphrys but shot over from the right of the box.

Young striker Josiah Dyer came on for his league debut on 88 minutes and headed a cross by fellow substitute Dexter Lembikisa but the goalkeeper caught easily.

Subs: Chapman, Ruffels, Hogg, Koroma, Ladapo, Turton, Hodge
  • 2:15pm
Barnsley have taken only a point from their last five games.
  • 2:15pm
The Reds – who lost 2-1 at Stockport County on Saturday – are tenth, four places and six points off the play-off positions with 16 matches remaining.
  • 2:19pm
Head coach Darrell Clarke told the Chronicle: “We will need two points a game which will take a big change in form. “It will take a really good run but I expect us to deliver that. The expectation is always high and rightly so.
  • 2:23pm
“I understand the fans’ frustrations and I get it. It will always be the case when the club previously has mainly played in the Championship. “There will always be pressure which is on me, and I don’t like to take that responsibility away from me.
  • 2:26pm
“The message is clear in the changing room: show me you’re top six players or move on. “I am quite ruthless. “Everyone understands it’s maybe a bit of a transitional period for ourselves. “It’s not like a lot of players are leaving this football club and kicking on.
  • 2:31pm
“But I do think we are capable of getting in the top six this season. “My glass is always half full and it starts on Saturday which is a really massive game for us.”
  • 2:37pm
The Terriers, managed by former Reds boss Michael Duff, are sixth in League One, two points clear in the play-off places and six ahead of tenth-placed Barnsley.
  • 2:37pm
Huddersfield have only taken a point from their last four games, after a 16-game unbeaten run.
  • 2:40pm
Clarke told the Chronicle: “We are six points off Huddersfield so it’s a big game. “It’s a derby. We didn’t perform at Huddersfield earlier in the season. “It’s a chance to put a good performance on in front or our fans. “We will be ready for a full-blooded derby and looking forward to it.”
  • 2:45pm
Clarke added: “We have to get a re-start and kick-start and there is no better game than a derby to do that in. “Huddersfield are expected to be right up there. Their manager knows this club very well.
  • 2:46pm
“There is a lot more financial capabilities in all the big clubs. Huddersfield are one of those big-hitters. “I think they spent £3million plus on centre forwards in January. “There is rumoured to be a player signing for a top six team on £15,000 a week. “I don’t complain, it’s the nature of the footballing world. But a lot more League One clubs are paying massive wages. “The average is well over £5million, two years ago it was about £3.2million, and last year it was just over £4million. “More owners in the game want to get up the pyramid so it is fierce competition but I don’t shirk from trying to get us into the top six.
  • 2:48pm
“I believe players have a ceiling but it is my job to make sure our players reach their ceiling. “I think we can give anyone a good game but we’ve come off it. “I think a few of our players are more than capable of playing for a top six team, but a few need to get there very very quickly.”
  • 2:48pm
Duff spent a season at Oakwell, leading them to the 2023 play-off final, before moving to Swansea City. In his pre-match press conference yesterday, Duff said: “We’re both on dicky runs. “Our concentration is us. “I had a great year at Barnsley. I had a brilliant rapport with the supporters and enjoyed my time there. “It’s water under the bridge. “If I get a bit of stick, I get a bit of stick. If I don’t, I don’t. “The rebuild we did there was really good. “It was a mistake leaving but you can’t live in the past.”
  • 2:48pm
Huddersfield lost 1-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City then 3-2 at lowly Northampton Town having been 3-0 down. They then drew 0-0 at home to Reading on Saturday.
  • 2:48pm
Duff has faced Clarke eight times in the league as a manager, winning seven and drawing once – at Oakwell when Barnsley boss and Clarke was Port Vale manager in 2022.
  • 2:48pm
Since Duff won 13 out of 14 home league games as Barnsley boss in 2023, they have won 13 out of 40.
  • 2:50pm
They have the 16th best home form in League One this season with four wins from 15 league games.
  • 2:51pm
After winning against Wrexham and Crawley at the start of 2025, they have taken just a point, and failed to score, in their last two matches against Stevenage and Burton.
  • 2:51pm
There will be plenty of connections between the dugouts as Martin Devaney, now Clarke’s assistant, played with Duff at Cheltenham and coached with him at Barnsley while Terriers assistant Martin Paterson was also at Oakwell under Duff.
  • 2:51pm
Although they sold Michal Helik to Oxford United in January, and Matty Pearson is injured, Huddersfield still have former Barnsley player Herbie Kane, while Reds midfielder Jon Russell signed from the Terriers.
  • 2:51pm
Barnsley lost 2-0 twice in Huddersfield in October, with two poor performances. They conceded long-range strikes from Ben Wiles and David Kasumu in the final ten minutes of the league meeting then, four days later, went out of the EFL Trophy as they had just one of the game’s 26 shots.
  • 2:52pm
The clubs have met 81 times, with Barnsley winning 29 and losing 36, including the last four which have all been away.
  • 2:54pm
Huddersfield have not won in five attempts at Oakwell since a 1-0 victory in 2012 which is best remembered as Mido’s only appearance for the Reds.
  • 2:54pm
Defender Mael de Gevigney said: “It’s a really important game for us, especially after the last few games. We need to do everything to win this game and close the gap between us and the play-offs. “Bad runs happen in a season. “We have 16 games coming, we know it’s not going to be easy but we have the players, staff and club to be in the play-offs. We will do everything to make it.”
  • 2:56pm
De Gevigney is looking forward to coming up against Herbie Kane who moved from Oakwell to Huddersfield last summer. He said: “He’s a familiar face. Herbie is a very good player. “He was very good with us this year and he’s helping Huddersfield to be in the first part of the table. I wish him the best but not on Saturday.”
