CHILDREN from a Bolton-upon-Dearne primary school came together with Barnsley Council to plant a number of fruit trees last week.
Green-fingered pupils at Lacewood Primary School helped plant eight fruit trees in a scheme which is hoped to become an ongoing environmental project involving all four primary schools in Dearne South.
The vision is to transform the area with trees, shrubs, bulbs, wild flowers and wildlife habitats.
Kate Akeroyd, the school’s deputy head, said: “At Lacewood we are always looking for ways in which the children can improve and develop their local area.
“We feel by providing such opportunities, the children not only start to take pride in their local area, but also have a vested interest in protecting and preserving it for future generations.
“The fruit tree planting project, supported by Barnsley Council and Kids Plant Trees, has enabled our children to have a real impact in improving green spaces and see their plans come to life.”
Coun Deborah Pearson added: “This is a wonderful scheme in Dearne South where children can be at one with nature, learning about their environment, and loving where they live.
“We are very proud to be a part of this tree-mendous project.”
