A BARNSLEY College student has been crowned a disabled gymnastic champion for the second consecutive year.

Ellie Hardy, a Learning for Living and Work student, took home the Yorkshire champion title for grade four disability acrobatic gymnastics at a recent competition at the Wakefield Gymnastics Club.

Alongside her college studies, Ellie trains four times a week at the same club, and has been encouraging other youngsters to take up the sport.

She said: “I started training in gymnastics when I was eight years old.

“I enjoy taking part in gymnastics conditioning - I am proud of myself for putting in a lot of effort and hard work to achieve this.

“My tutors have been very encouraging and supportive throughout my journey - I thank them for their continued support.

“I encourage young people with disabilities to take part in gymnastics.

“It can be rewarding and fulfilling, regardless of the challenges one might face.”

In March of last year, Ellie qualified for the Disability Gymnastics British Finals where she and her partner secured third place in the country.

Will Roberts, Learning for Living and Work curriculum leader and one of Ellie’s tutors, added: “It is a great achievement to be named champion once, but to win it twice in a row is a real accolade and we’re so proud of Ellie.

“She has shown dedication and resilience all whilst continuing her studies.

“During the students’ learning, we encourage them to take part in enriching activities that contribute to their independent living skills, and we are glad to see she has taken that on board.”
