FOLLOWING an appeal in the Chronicle a local cafe has managed to collect thousands of poppies to create a large memorial ahead of this year’s Remembrance Day.
Maggie’s Cafe in Monk Bretton put out the appeal back in September, asking anyone capable of knitting poppies to send them in, so they could be displayed on the side of the building.
Back then, the cafe’s knit and natter group had already made 500, however they have since collected around 2,000 which now hang on the side of the wall, with more set to be added.
Owner Maggie Wood told the Chronicle: “We’ve had so many donated, from some people bringing just two in to others bringing 100-plus.
“It looks amazing and we’ve still got a few more to sew on - there have been total strangers coming into the shop for the first time just to donate.
“I’d like to thank the Chronicle because we wouldn’t have had this response otherwise.
“Then I’d also like to thank the staff for putting in all the extra hours - they’ve been amazing to stay after work and help out.”
