BARNSLEY man Azeem Rafiq’s book about his experiences of racism in cricket has been nominated for a prestigious award.

The former Barnsley CC and Yorkshire CCC spinner, who lived in the Gawber area for almost two decades, spoke out about racism at the club and in the wider game.

His book ‘It’s Not Banter, It’s Racism’ has now been included on the long list for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year.

The panel said: “Azeem examines cricket’s relationship with race and pulls no punches, even when he turns the spotlight on himself.”

Rafiq said: “It’s amazing news to be short-listed. Fingers crossed for the next stage.”
