A RAFT of temporary road changes in the town centre are set to become permanent if cabinet bosses approve the plans.
Prohibition of driving - on Cheapside, Kendray Street, Market Street, May Day Green, New Street, Peel Square and Queen Street - and changes to loading and unloading were trialled for an 18-month period, starting last year.
Disabled spaces have been provided on Eldon Street, while waiting, loading and unloading on Eldon Street, Lambra Road, Midland Street and Wesley Street have been outlawed.
Driving, loading and unloading has also been axed between 9.30am and 4pm, and 7pm and 4am, on Albert Street East.
Those experimental restrictions are now set to be made permanent following a cabinet meeting next month.
A report states: “Throughout the trial period of the experimental traffic regulation order (ETRO) the head of highways and engineering has monitored the effectiveness of the restrictions.
“We believe that the optimum restrictions have been in place for the required minimum period of six months so they should be made permanent, subject to cabinet approval.”
