Wombwell Town continued their perfect start to the NCEL Division One season as they won 2-0 at home to Harrogate Railway Athletic on Tuesday thanks to Jordan Kershaw’s brace.

They have won all seven league games this season and are now due to visit Horbury tonight who are second, six points behind.

Wombwell manager Karl Rose said: “It’s been a phenomenal start by the lads. It’s everything we wanted.

“We’re six points clear.

“Last season we started really well then fell away but, this year, we know more about the league and we have the strength in depth and quality to keep it going for longer. We’re going into games knowing that, if we do our stuff, we have every chance of winning.

“We brought five or six players in and they have gelled straight away.

“We have had tough games as well.

“We have played Dearne, Ilkley and Brigg who are all high in the league and I think will challenge for promotion.

“We have to back it up against Horbury who are second.”

Athersley Rec won 2-1 Club Thorne Colliery. The goals arrived in the first 18 minutes with Rec’s Alfie Bakes and James Woodhouse netting either side of a Thorne penalty.

Dearne and District won 2-1 at home to Armthorpe Welfare. After Bayley Lowe’s opener was cancelled out by a penalty, Shay Evans-Booth got the winner.
