Darrell Clarke says his Barnsley players are in for a ‘really hard week’ during their training camp at Loughborough University.

The Reds are due to arrive in Leicestershire today and spend the week there, ending with a friendly against Mallorca on Friday.

Clarke told the Chronicle: “We will have a really hard week and we’re stepping up the preparation.

“It will be a good bonding and fitness week. Every team I have been involved in which got promotion, always bonded well.

“Team spirit is massive. It’s a trip to do that and we will get fitness work in as well.”

Barnsley are hoping to add to their squad this week, with a deal for a midfielder thought to be very close.

On incomings, Clarke said: “We’re looking at left wing-backs, a defensive midfielder, number ten and centre forward. I like to have adaptability and different options for 4-4-2, so we're maybe looking at a wide player.

"Talks are ongoing every day. We’re being patient and chipping away. I understand fans' frustrations because they want new signings but they will be happening.”

Meanwhile, defenders Kacper Lopata and Jack Shepherd could leave on loan. Clarke said: “I have a lot of good options at centre-back. They are both young boys who need to play games. But we need to make sure we also have enough cover.”
