Barnsley are hoping to bring in a couple of new players before their training camp at Loughborough University next week, with head coach Darrell Clarke repeating the key areas they are looking at.
The Reds have so far brought in midfielder Conor Hourihane – as a player/coach – defender Marc Roberts and goalkeeper Jackson Smith
They currently have no senior left wing-backs in their squad, although Callum Styles – who is yet to return after playing for Hungary at the Euros and could leave this summer – can play there if required.
Up front is another area where they are low on proven first team players while the Reds are keen to bring in another midfielder.
Speaking after the friendly win at Alfreton at the weekend, Clarke told the Chronicle: “Obviously we’re looking at left wing-back, midfield and centre forwards.
“We know the areas we need to improve on. We’re working very hard to do that. It’s very difficult. I am sure the fans don’t wan to hear that. But it is.”
Clarke also said the ‘hope and the plan’ was to bring in players this week before the week in Loughborough. They are understood to have submitted bids for several players, and have reportedly had one accepted for Birmingham City’s Emmanuel Longelo.
