IT’S a busy start in the Barnsley Casualty department in tonight’s Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts (Channel 5, 9pm).
Running the shift today is Sister Jane alongside Consultant Doctor, Dave Walker.
In a clip from tonight’s episode, Dr Walker explains: “There’s always a crisis in the emergency department, there’s always something unexpected, it’s unpredictable. It’s slightly chaotic.”

Today’s crisis is a shortage of space in the specialist wards which admit casualty patients.
Clearly frustrated, Sister Jane comments: “There’s no orthopaedic beds, no surgical beds and no gynae beds. Beds are rubbish in the hospital. We’re dependent totally on doctors upstairs discharging patients and patients going home……There is very, very little that we can do to create a bed. It’s very frustrating you just feel like you are at a standstill.”
