Barnsley made it three successive wins in all competitions with a 1-0 victory at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.
Adam Phillips opened the scoring early on then the Reds were barely troubled by the hosts who did not have a shot on target in a fairly dull game.
Barnsley are still eighth, now just a point off the play-offs in League One, after a gutsy and battling performance.
Michael Duff made two changes from the last league game as Slobodan Tedic and Phillips replaced the injured James Norwood and benched Josh Benson.
The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute when Devante Cole received Herbie Kane’s pass on the left of the box and pulled the ball back perfectly for Phillips who found the bottom right corner from 12 yards. It was his first league goal for the club following his FA Cup strike a week earlier.
The hosts almost levelled minutes later when, after good work by Christian Saydee on the right, Taylor Moore flashed a shot just wide of the bottom left corner with the sliding Ryan Bowman inches away from tapping it in.
It could have been 2-0 on 34 minutes when Cole’s header from a Nicky Cadden cross hit the bar and Tedic turned the rebound wide from five yards out with the goal gaping. It was an awkward height for the striker who had little time to think about it, having held the ball up impressively in the build-up.
Liam Kitching, twice, and Cadden had shots from outside the box but failed to trouble Marosi while Shrewsbury’s Tom Bayliss curled a free-kick wide of the right post from 25 yards just before the break.
Very little happened for most of the second half, as Tedic blazed well over from 25 yards then Jordan Shipley did similar at the other end twice.
Cole chipped an effort over the bar from the left of the box on 85 minutes after good work by Phillips. At the other end, Luke Leahy shot well over 15 yards out after a scramble in the box.
