A HAULAGE business owner from Barnsley who lived the life of a migrant for a month admits he is now more sympathetic towards the issue - and his journey will be aired on Channel 4 next month.

Nathan Rimmington, 32, from Thurnscoe, is one of six people who took part in the series which took them to the frontline reality of the perilous journeys refugees and migrants make to the UK.

As a haulage business owner, Nathan says that each immigrant that is found in one of his trucks is a £10,000 fine.

And after being approached by producers he was happy to take part in the challenge.

He told the Chronicle: “We went to Somalia and stopped in refugee camps.

“We slept in the Sahara Desert, climbed the Alps, went over to France and then we came back over to England on a rubber dinghy.

“I didn’t really care about the topic all that much beforehand but obviously you hear so much about it on the news - it’s a big thing.

“Where I come from in the lorry sector, it’s a £10,000 fine for every immigrant in your truck.”

And Nathan admits he’s more sympathetic towards the issue after completing the show.

“I didn’t want to come across as racist as that’s not what I am,” he added.

“I’m just a real person from tarn - what you see is what you get.

“It was the kids we saw that did it for me.

“Everyone talks about it on social media but I’ve lived it now.”

The show, Go Back To Where You Came From, will air on Channel 4 on February 3.
