ALMOST £50,000 is set to be spent to improve the bridleway near Netherwood Academy.
Earlier this week, a total of £46,282 was approved at the council’s Section 106 panel to improve the bridleway outside the school.
Councillors say it will improve both the experience of school pupils and those who use the area.
A report states: “We have received multiple complaints from parents, councillors, and the MP about the condition of the bridleway particular the eroded surface that holds water and is difficult to use.
“Illegal vehicle access had created additional ruts in the surface that some older leisure users were finding difficulty with.
“As a bridleway for leisure use the current surface is acceptable but it is clearly not for active travel use to school.
“Highways have estimated just under £46,282 to scrape back, widen and resurface the bridleway with compacted stone.”
Coun Kevin Osborne, who represents the Darfield ward, told the Chronicle: “Councillors are pleased that Barnsley Council’s Section 106 committee have chosen to support this application.
“This bridleway has seen a significant increase in footfall in recent years and the proposals will not only improve the experience of school pupils but all active travel users across our community.”
