WOMBWELL Town got back to winning ways in the league this week and now host Hallam in the FA Vase third round on Saturday.

Hallam play a league above Town who have won four matches to get to the last 64.

Manager Karl Rose said: “It’s a huge occasion for us and we’re expecting a big crowd. We will go into it with no fear.

“Hallam won’t be relishing coming to us, they have everything to lose.

“We beat Handsworth earlier in the cup run who beat Hallam last week. It’s a sign they can be beaten.

“We know they will up for it.

“It’s a chance to get in the last 32 nationally.

“If we play like we did in our last game, I will be proud and we’ll have a chance.”

Town took three points from two home games this week, leaving them third in the NCEL Division One table.

They lost 4-1 at home to Brigg Town on Saturday.

Town then won 6-2 at home to Selby Town on Tuesday, ending a run of three straight defeats.

Kane Reece put them in front but Selby went 2-1 up.

Wombwell scored four times in 15 minutes through Reece, Jordan Kershaw, Eddie Agnew and Josh Nodder then Reece completed his hat-trick late on.

The game had been called off earlier in the season due to a serious injury when Selby were 2-0 up on 78 minutes. It was ‘pay what you want’ for fans.

Rose said: “We’ve had a bad run in the league.

“We have been missing too many chances and making daft mistakes.

“It’s the first time in our six years as a club that we’ve had a really bad run.

“It’s sometimes difficult.

“Saturday was the worst we’ve played, especially late on.

“We were dreadful and stopped playing as a team.

“On Tuesday we got back to basics and worked really hard.

“We still gave two stupid goals away and were 2-1 down even though we created loads of chance.

“But we showed character to come back off the canvas.

“It was a special night and we have to use that as a launchpad.”

Town are 14 points behind leaders Horbury Town – who are in the only automatic promotion place – and three off second-placed Dearne and District with two games in hand on both. They play Dearne on December 14.

Rose said: “Budget-wise, there are probably half a dozen teams in this league who are paying more than us.

“But we’ve set our stall out to challenge for first place.

“We’ve had a bad run which has pulled us back into the pack.

“At the minute Horbury look home and hosed but football is a funny game.

“We just want to be consistent and be there to catch them if they slip up.

“We have had really good runs in the past and we need another one.”
