A TOWN centre coffee shop will open on Christmas Day offering free food and drink to those who are spending the festive period alone.
Costa Coffee, on Queen Street, will open from 10am to 1pm for homeless people, blue light workers and the local community who aren’t set to spend the big day with their loved ones.
Although not a national scheme by the coffee chain, area manager Kim Matthews is from Barnsley and she decided she wanted to support residents this year.
She told the Chronicle: “I’ve never done something like this before but I’ve always lived in Barnsley.
“Wandering around the town recently I’ve seen a few more homeless people.
“Christmas is fast approaching and not everyone has somewhere to go or to share it with.
“It’s one day where we’ll be able to help homeless people, blue light workers and the local community.
“We won’t charge anyone at all.
“Hopefully we can make a little difference to someone’s day.”
