Barnsley came from behind to draw 1-1 at Stoke City in an incident-packed game on Wednesday which saw a penalty save and four red cards for players and coaches.
The Reds conceded early but levelled through Cauley Woodrow's magnificent free-kick then Brad Collins gave away but saved a penalty just before the break.
Collins continued to keep the Reds in the game after the break but Barnsley also missed chances then Tommy Smith was sent off for the hosts along with three coaches as the game ended with a series of bad-tempered incident.
Markus Schopp sprang some surprises in his line-up, after bringing in Aapo Halme for the injured Ben Williams and full debutant Aaron Leya Iseka for Clarke Oduor who dropped to the bench. Callum Brittain, usually a right wing-back, played in central midfield with Toby Sibbick on the right wing.
Barnsley did not have a shot in Saturday's 3-0 loss at Bournemouth but, in Stoke, Woodrow's low 22-yard effort after a counter-attack from a home corner was pushed around the left corner by Josef Bursik in the tenth minute.
The Reds had started brightly but conceded in the 16th minute when Tommy Smith was released down the right by Joe Allen and his low cross was not properly cleared by Michal Helik so the ball fell to Sam Surridge to tap in from close range.
The same player should have doubled the lead ten minutes later when once again he was found by a low right-wing cross from Smith but, unmarked eight yards out, he missed the ball with his right foot and it hit his left. Mario Vrancic's low 25-yard shot was then easily saved by Collins.
Woodrow levelled on 37 minutes when he curled a sensational free-kick from almost 30 yards into the top left corner. It was his 51st goal for the club and a moment of magic from the Reds captain.
Ex-Red Jacob Brown should have made it 2-0 just before the break when he chested down a Smith cross from the right but fired over from 12 yards.
Stoke missed an even better chance in stoppage time when, after Romal Palmer lost the ball in a dangerous area from a wild Jasper Moon pass, Surridge was played through on goal and judged to have been tripped by Collins. The goalkeeper brilliantly pushed Vrancic's penalty onto the crossbar in the final action of the first half.
Schopp brought on Claudio Gomes and Victor Adeboyejo at half-time for Palmer and Iseka.
Stoke had a succession of corners approaching the hour-mark, but Barnsley scrambled them all away eventually with Collins particularly impressing as he saved a powerful Surridge volley from five yards out, with a strong right hand, then smothered a Brown effort from even closer.
Collins then denied Vrancic again from a close-range header from a right-wing cross which was repelled by a superb reaction save.
Barnsley could have taken the lead on 74 minutes but Brittain shot wide of the bottom left corner from 15 yards after Frieser pulled the ball back from the byline. At the other end, Stoke substitute Sam Clucas headed wide when unmarked seven yards out from Josh Tymon's left-wing cross.
Woodrow tried another free-kick from a similar distance to the goal but it took a big deflection and was pushed wide by Bursik.
Surridge missed yet another chance when he met a low left-wing cross six yards out but shot straight at Collins who made another save when an effort either side would have brought a goal. Seconds later at the other end, Adeboyejo met a Brittain cross five yards out but could not turn the ball in.
Smith was then sent off on 85 minutes for a tackle on Gomes. There was a melee in the dugouts in injury-time after a Stoke coach ran into the Barnsley technical area to get the ball. Barnsley coach Joe Laumann, as well as Stoke coaches Dean Holden and Rory Delap, were all sent off.
