ONE of the most recognisable voices in the world returned to his roots for an ‘audience with’ event.
Veteran actor Brian Blessed, 87, was born in Mexborough and grew up on Probert Avenue, Goldthorpe.
Brian, whose famous roles include Augustus in ‘I, Claudius’, King Richard IV in Blackadder and Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon, received an OBE for services to the arts and charity in 2016.
He returned for a event at the Empress Ballroom in Mexborough last Friday.
A spokesperson from the venue said: “Brian commenced the evening in his usual eccentric manner and gave the audience an insight into his early acting career and revealed his enrolment in the drama class at his school.
“Brian was educated at Dearneside school in Goldthorpe and was born into a mining family.
“He regaled the audience with his wit and resourcefulness and many people would remember him in his early days for his appearance in Z Cars and Flash Gordon.
“Brian was well-received at the Empress Ballroom and would like to return in the near future.”
