NEW plans to build a community hall have faced opposition as residents fear the area isn’t suitable for the amount of people it will attract.

Plans for the hall near Beacon Close in Silkstone Common were submitted in July, after a similar site - that was disused for years - was demolished in 2019.

Previous plans to demolish and rebuild a new single-storey building on the site have been submitted since as early as 2013, though while approval was granted with conditions they never came to fruition.

If new plans go ahead, the hall would be operated by Greenworks, a provision for adults with learning disabilities.

Locals were able to comment on the plans until this Wednesday, with some raising concerns about the feasibility of the site.

“There’s no vehicle access and the only way to reach the site is by a small footpath,” Elvin Athey, who lives near the proposed development, told the Chronicle.

“When the previous building was originally built people didn’t have cars, everyone was on foot so it wasn’t a problem.

“Everyone who comes now is going to have to park somewhere on the main road or in the nearby old people’s complex.

“There’s some space on Beacon Close but it’s a narrow road where people like to keep their verges tidy, so I’m concerned about cars driving all over them.”
