MOUNT Vernon Hospital will close by the end of December.
The closure has been brought about through the implementation of a new way of delivering care to those who are not well enough to be in hospital, but not well enough to go home.
Patients on the two wards at Mount Vernon have already been transferred to Barnsley Hospital, and work is ongoing to relocate the remaining services and functions.
It is expected this will be complete by the end of December at which point the hospital will close.
Clinical teams are being transferred to other South West Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust’s sites.
Sean Rayner, district director of SWYFT, said: “Mount Vernon Hospital holds a lot of memories for people in Barnsley. Many have worked there, been treated or visited relatives being cared for on the site.
“The trust is working as part of new partnerships and commissioning arrangements in Barnsley for the Intermediate Care Service to make sure people have the right care, in the right place, at the right time. We are trying to ensure that care is delivered as conveniently as possible for patients and wraps around them, their carers and families.”
The trust plans to dispose of the site once the hospital has closed. The first step will be for the board of directors to declare Mount Vernon surplus to requirements, and then there is a process to go through before it can be marketed for sale.
