A BARNSLEY College student who is battling against cancer is determined to make a difference.

Shireen Connah, who has been diagnosed with both breast and bone cancer, is studying to become a qualified nurse specialising in palliative care.

Last year, the 41-year-old completed a level two counselling programme before returning to college to prepare for an even greater challenge.

She is now studying level three counselling skills while studying part-time for a higher education diploma.

Since her diagnosis, Shireen, from Shafton, has been determined to continue her studies while enduring bouts of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Undeterred by the risk of further complications and the possibility of limb amputation, Shireen’s unwavering drive to help others shines through adversity.

She said: “My dream is to work in palliative care and I want to give back by supporting patients through their toughest moments, just as I’ve been supported during mine.

“I wouldn’t have come this far without the incredible support from my tutors at Barnsley College - they have been key to developing my confidence, skills and abilities”

“Their encouragement has helped me push through when things have felt overwhelming.”
