A BARNSLEY headteacher retiring from an ‘outstanding’ school after 20 years is to be replaced by her deputy - a former winner of the Yorkshire teacher of the year award.

Birdwell Primary has been rated outstanding or good by Ofsted throughout Jane Gilmour’s tenure as headteacher.

As she prepares to retire next month she said she was content to be leaving a steady ship in the hands of a very capable successor in her deputy Nigel Bailey, who takes over from September.
