Barry Cotter is likely to miss the majority of Barnsley’s season due to surgery while Mael de Gevigney and Neil Farrugia are doubts for tomorrow’s game at Wycombe Wanderers.

Right wing-back Cotter – who had fought his way back into the side over the Christmas period after being dropped – picked up an ankle injury early in 2025 and now needs an operation.

Head coach Darrell Clarke told the Chronicle: “Barry Cotter’s is really bad news. He needs surgery. He will miss probably the majority of the season now.

“I feel for Barry, he’s a great lad. He will keep his spirits high. I know he will. He’s great around the group. I know he’ll bounce back.

“He started the season really well then came off it and Corey O’Keeffe is second in the league for assists.

“We have Georgie (Gent) and Neil at left wing back so there’s competition. Barry was certainly coming back into good form so it’s a big blow.”

French centre-back De Gevigney missed a first league game in 63 on Saturday due to an ankle problem while Farrugia has a thigh issue.

Clarke said: “Mael is coming on but I am not sure he’ll be ready for tomorrow night if I am honest. Neil is struggling as well with a tight thigh.

“Mael is a massive miss because he’s Mr Consistency. I love the kid to bits. He’s professional every single day of his life. You will always miss a player of his calibre but it’s up to other players to step up to the plate.”
