SCHOOLCHILDREN said they are ‘ashamed’ of flytipping in Barnsley and worry that other people think they are ‘scruffs’ because of how it makes the town look.
Pupils at Ward Green Primary School have been learning about the effects of flytipping following a front page article in the Chronicle highlighting the problem.
They have now written letters trying to discourage people from dumping their rubbish.
The pupils, who are aged eight and nine, said they felt ‘heartbroken’ and ‘devastated’ at the sight of rubbish being dumped, and were concerned about the effects on wildlife.
One pupil, Joe Hibberd, said: “They should go to prison and get a fine.”
