A LOCAL choir celebrated the end of their centenary celebrations with a concert at the magnificent Wentworth Woodhouse.

Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir (THMVC) have held a variety of concerts this year to celebrate their 100th anniversary, including one at their home village in Thurnscoe Coronation Club, and others in Goldthorpe and Swinton.

However to end the momentous year, they put together a show in one of the county’s most stunning venues, the 18th grade-I listed Wentworth Woodhouse.

Local dignitaries including Mayor of Barnsley John Clarke and Barnsley South MP Stephanie Peacock attended the event, which saw the choir perform traditional music, rock classics like Bohemian Rhapsody and a handful of Christmas tunes to get people into the festive spirit.

During the concert, £900 was presented to the Bluebell Wood Charity for terminally ill children, that was raised during a previous memorial concert for Irene Hill, who was the choir’s accompanist for many years.

Chairman Ian Dowlman told the Chronicle: “It went absolutely brilliantly.

“Everything came together well and I think the organisation at Wentworth was very good they were all helpful.

“Afterwards one of the volunteers came up and said that we sounded marvellous she actually went back to the staircase and said our voices had travelled far.

“It was a beautiful evening and everyone left with a smile on their face.”
