A TEACHER who has taught — and disciplined — several generations of Penistone children retires today.

And assistant headteacher Graham Morrison will be joined by head Glynis Gower who is also retiring. Mrs Gower has spent seven years at the school as headteacher but Mr Morrison has spent his whole 38 year teaching career there.

He said: “I started in 1969 with the intention of staying three years. That was my career plan and here I am 38 years later. The school has changed considerably but it is a good place to teach with good staff and good kids.

“I've been very fortunate in the opportunities I have.”

He said one of his fondest memories was organising student reunions in 1992 — the school's 600th anniversary year. He arranged for parties to be thrown over three nights for more than 4,000 ex-pupils.

In his time at PGS Mr Morrison has been a geography and PE teacher, head of department and head of year as well assistant headteacher.

Mrs Gower took over the school in 2000. She is responsible for several changes at the school — including the move to a more modern uniform. The school's IT equipment has also been brought up to date under her leadership and exam results have improved.
