FOR one year now a group in Wombwell has been supporting men struggling with mental health issues and its members hope to see more people make the most of the service.
Andy’s Man Club, a national men’s mental health and social group, began in 2016 after 23-year-old Andrew Roberts took his life despite never expressing any struggles with his mental health.
Following the tragedy, his family came up with the idea for the group, which allows men to openly talk about their emotions without fear of judgement.
Years later and there are now more than 240 groups running each week across the country, helping men struggling with all manner of problems.
Last February sessions began running out of Wombwell Library, with countless in the area supported by this new cause.
Facilitator David Hewitt told the Chronicle: “We’re averaging between 25 and 33 attendees a week now - there’s a lot of returning faces too which is good.
“When I first started going in 2021 I didn’t know groups like this existed, and I know that there’ll be other men out there who would benefit from this but just don’t know about it.
“The positive change I’ve seen from recurring members is unreal - everyone I’ve seen come through has changed for the better.”
