Darrell Clarke has given an update on the fitness of Joe Gauci and Jonathan Lewis while praising strikers Davis Keillor-Dunn and Stephen Humphrys for their performance in the 2-1 win at Northampton Town on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Gauci, who is on loan from Aston Villa, came off on Saturday at Rotherham with a hip problem. Head coach Clarke told the Chronicle: “Gauci will be a few weeks. He’s gone back to Villa for his rehab. We’re hoping to get him back as quick as possible.”

American Lewis was not in the squad in midweek. Clarke said: “Jon Lewis did some running after the game the other day and felt his thigh. We need to assess that.”

Keillor-Dunn netted his 12th and 13th goals of the season in the midweek victory. Clarke said: “He’s been vital. You don’t want anyone else on the ball in those moments. Humphrys was outstanding as well. He probably deserved a goal and his work-rate was exceptional. He’s struggled with illness and lost about 4kg. With Max (Watters) coming back, and Clement (Rodrigues), our centre forward options are obviously looking a bit more positive.”

Jackson Smith came in for Gauci and made his full Reds debut in goal. He conceded a free-kick for handball in the opening minutes after being shoved out of his box.

Clarke said: “It looked like it was a foul. But he saved it and then made another good one. Credit to him, he kicked it well at times. I am pleased with him.”

Clarke’s name was sung often by the away end. He said: “I appreciate any support I get. The supporters come, they understand where we’re at. They pay a lot of money to travel a long way on a Tuesday night and we appreciate the support.”
