I was much perturbed to see that BIADS is struggling. It is such a worthwhile service but, as they said in their post, donations, fundraising and grants have all declined compared to previous years and they have no statutory funding.
It costs them £15,000 a month to run which covers everything from salaries to utilities, and I absolutely know they are a charity that doesn’t waste a penny.
So this is a bit of a shout out in case anyone can help them with donations, with anything really because if dementia has touched your life, as it has mine, then you will know how invaluable some support is.
A wonderful charity and I am beyond sad that they’re in such dire straits.
I had a fabulous (and quite emotional) trip up to Glasgow last week for a book event. What a beautiful city it is, the architecture is stunning.
There are buildings around George Square that make you think you’re in Rome. The last time I went there, I took mum with me and we had a Thelma and Louise (minus the ending) road trip.
The weather was glorious and I dropped her off at her pal’s house where they had a grand reunion while I was doing what I had to do.
I’m so glad we went, not long after that her friend began to slide fast into dementia and that was the last time they saw each other.
This time I wore my mum’s ring because I felt as if I was taking her home with me again. I spent a lot of time in Glasgow when I was younger with family so there were lots of memories swirling in the air for me.
I stayed behind an extra day to see my cousins. One of them is a hospital consultant, an inspirational young lady who was horrified at what happened to mum in hospital, they were all very fond of ‘Auntie Jenny’.
She is as frustrated with the NHS as many medics are, indeed her boss confessed she’d just spent a £15 million budget… and has so little to show for it.
Yep. My cousin, spurred on by mum, is doing marvellous things in the NHS up there. She’s trialling an initiative where upon calling an ambulance, a consultant is involved who can give advice via Facetime on whether that patient needs to be admitted.
It’s madly successful and has cut down the A and E queues massively.
The nub of her aim is to try and get people to take from the NHS what they need and only that – then there will be enough to go round.
So many of the Scots don’t understand why they have free prescriptions and would gladly pay to put millions back into the system.
Tablets issued when they don’t need to be – total waste of cash. The NHS is so big, it’s unmanageable, a beast that has just been allowed to run wild without being tamed - the largest employer in Europe.
My cousin has her teeth well and truly embedded into her project. I’m beyond proud of her and what she is doing. The start of a new dawn? Let’s hope so.
Happy Easter everyone. Hope you all have a nice mini break and you get an egg of the quality that we used to have in bygone times.
Chocolate these days is pumped full of palm oil and inferior crap because the once staple cocoa butter makes bigger profits for the cosmetic industry. Once upon a time a Buttons egg was nectar for the gods. But stuff a bit of chocolate in anyway, feet up, Jesus film on. There’s a joy in just being a child again at this time of year.
