A SHADOW scholarship coach at Barnsley Football Club has made the Team GB Men’s squad for the Deaflympics later this year - but he’s asking for supports from residents to get there.

Hashim Mahmood must raise £2,500 to cover essential costs including kits, accommodation and insurance for the Deaflympics in Tokyo later this year.

He was only a few months old when he contracted an ear infection that led to him becoming profoundly death.

But he’s taken it all in his stride and hasn’t let his hearing impairment hold him back.

Hashim, who plays in midfield, said: “I’m incredibly excited and honoured to represent Team GB in Tokyo.

“Although at this stage it is still not a 100 per cent guarantee to be selected for Tokyo, I will ensure I continue my hard work and commitment in training and have a good performance in the upcoming friendly fixture.

“I’m training intensely, focusing on fitness, technical, tactical and mental preparation.

“Every session counts, and I’m determined to perform well.”

Hashim admits it’s not ideal that he needs to fundraise to make the squad, but has thanked those who have donated so far.

He added: “It’s frustrating, but I’m grateful for the support I’ve received.

“Fundraising adds pressure, but it also builds community involvement.”

He’s raised more than £600 so far and a link to donate can be found here:
