THOUSANDS of pounds of damage has been caused to play equipment in Thurnscoe.

Last week, the basket swing at Thurnscoe Park was deliberately set alight.

It’s estimated that around £3,500 worth of damage was caused following the blaze - and the council has admitted they do not have enough funds to continuously replace equipment.

Coun Sue Bellamy, who represents the Dearne North ward, told the Chronicle: “Vandalising children’s play equipment steals joy from innocent hearts and tarnishes our community spirit.

“To those who commit such acts: you sow seeds of destruction where there should be laughter.

“Let all right-minded residents of Thurnscoe stand together against these selfish idiots.

“If you have any information as to those responsible I urge you contact South Yorkshire Police.”

A spokesperson for the Dearne Area Team added the basket/buddy swing at Thurnscoe Park was set on fire last week.

“The estimated damage to repair it is £3,500.

“We do not have the revenue to keep replacing equipment at this level of damage, which is happening often in our green spaces.

“It’s a real shame for those that do use the parks and green spaces but also a lot of money that needs to be found to rectify damage time and time again, if anyone as any information please let us know in confidence.”
