WORSBROUGH Bridge extended their club record unbeaten run to 15 games with an impressive midweek 3-2 win at high-flying Brigg Town in NCEL Division One on Tuesday.
They took the lead through Owen Birks and Jack Appleyard but the third-placed hosts levelled twice, before a fine goal by Connor Glavin – son of Barnsley FC legend Ronnie – secured the win on 87 minutes.
Brigg had won their last seven matches and were unbeaten in 13.
Worsbrough have not been beaten in more than 100 days since September, winning 11 and drawing four after no wins from their first nine.
Manager Lee Morris said: “It’s mind-blowing.
“To say we had a slow start then to be 15 undefeated with 11 wins, it’s massive credit to the lads.
“They have a real bit between teeth about not getting beat. We believe we can carry it on.”
Bridge are currently eighth, six points off the top five play-off places.
Morris said: “I can’t mention the P word.
“I will get fined.
“We have some tough games coming up and we’ll see what happens after that.
“January and February is when the top contenders push on.
“When I was here last time we finished seventh. It would be nice to beat that.”
They now face another tough game on Saturday as they travel to runaway leaders Horbury Town.
Morris said: “We have the confidence and buzz.
“We’re not afraid of anyone.
“Horbury are well clear on merit and will take some catching.
“They have a good manager and good players.
“We will take the game to them.”
On the Brigg win, Morris said: “They were 13 unbeaten and we were unbeaten in 14.
“Something had to give and we came out on top.
“It was a great game for the neutral but not good for heart of a manager.
“It was two teams going at each other.
“Our skipper turned up and scored an absolutely worldie at the end.
“We had had one game in three weeks which wasn’t ideal.
“We’ve trained hard throughout.
“We have had 21 or 22 people turning up to train in minus six. We’re getting our rewards.”
Chairman Mark Booth added: “It’s been a fantastic run, the longest unbeaten run in our 42 years in the NCEL.
“It is testament to the hard work that Lee Morris, Rhys Meynell, Luke Smith and the players have put in this season.
“We have had some fantastic players and teams at the club over the years but, with the competition and money being spent at this level, this squad of players is as good as any in my time as chairman.
“The squad are pushing each other, and there is a real togetherness, which is so good to see, and with attendances up again this season, there is a real feel good factor around the club right now and the supporters, I hope, are enjoying what they are seeing.
“As we enter the last 18 games will be fighting for every point and see where it takes us come April.
“Dare we dream? Of course we do, that’s why we put the hours in every season.”
Bridge were the only Barnsley non-league side to play this week as the rest of the fixture list was ruined by the freezing weather.
There are some big games scheduled on Saturday.
Wombwell Town, who are currently second, visit fourth-placed Ilkley Town.
Dearne and District, who have slipped out of the top five play-off places to seventh, are set to visit Brigg.
There are only three points between second and seventh.
