A FOUNDING member of the Proud of Barnsley-nominated Barnsley Main Heritage Group who did everything he could to help out the community has died at the age of 74.

Chris Sayer was known by many for his involvement in various community activities, spreading beyond Barnsley Main and into Rabbit Ings Country Park at Royston and even Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Living with his wife Diane in Royston, Chris was described as ‘a southern gentleman who loved being outdoors’ and an avid twitcher who would get actively involved in whatever wildlife projects he could.

Chair of the Barnsley Main group, Helen Totty, told the Chronicle: “He was a founding member with us back when it all started in 2016.

“He contributes a lot to the nature and wildlife restoration at the site - he would volunteer so much of his time to help out.

“Everyone knew him and liked him, he was just lovely, a real gentleman who was so nice.”
