Darrell Clarke was disappointed with the home draw against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, despite scoring a last-minute leveller, but was pleased with his team’s performance overall.

Davis Keillor-Dunn put the Reds ahead then they missed several chances but former Barnsley man Luke Berry put the visitors 2-1 up after errors by Matty Craig and Gaga Slonina.

Substitute Max Watters rescued a point in the 96th minute.

Clarke said: “We’re disappointed not to win the game. Two individual mistakes and we go 2-1 down but it’s a great response and that’s the attitude we want.

“The performance on the whole was good. We hit the bar, had one cleared off the line, missed chances. It should be three points and there is a lot of frustration but we can take heart from the performance.”

On the late leveller, Clarke said: “Credit to the players, they have a never say die attitude. We’ve scored a few injury-time goals and conceded a few as well. I am delighted for Max. It was a great strike and the least we deserved.

“The last two performances are more to our standards. Nine times out of ten, if we play like that, we win that game.

“I can be critical sometimes but I won’t be tonight. I told them to get their heads up.”

Barnsley are unbeaten in six at home in all competitions but have won only once there in the league since February.

“We’ve dropped silly points at home - Northampton, Stockport and now Charlton.

“It’s another frustrating home night but the fans were magnificent and stayed with us until the end.”

Vimal Yoganathan made his full league debut. Clarke said: “He adds legs and energy. He has done well and is progressing all the time. He went away with Wales (under 19s) and scored a couple of goals. We want to get one or two of our young players into the team. I thought he had a good game. He started a little bit sloppy but got stronger.”

Defender Mael de Gevigney added: “It’s a weird feeling because I am a bit disappointed. I thought we played well. We were consistent in and out of possession and not really in danger. We were losing 2-1 but had the character to score at the end. It’s more two points lost but we’re playing better since the international break. We have played two pretty good teams who will fight for the top six at the end surely.”

Clarke confirmed that Luca Connell picked up an injury but he hoped that Adam Phillips could return on Saturday.
