BARNSLEY women’s team were crowned champions of Sheffield and District Tennis League Division Three.

They edged out runners-up Baslow after winning seven of their eight games against established clubs such as Fulwood, Grove, Beauchief and Hallamshire.

They have been promoted to Division Two.

Meanwhile, Barnsley’s mixed team beat Thorncliffe 9-0 to win promotion to Division One.

They finished a close second behind the champions Fulwood after winning eight of their nine matches.

Vice-chairman John Gregson said: “We are all just delighted with the success of our teams.

“To win the late summer league for the women and get promotion to Division One for the mixed is quite some going.

“One particularly pleasing aspect is the involvement of so many young players gelling perfectly with the more experienced players.

“This bodes so well for the future of the club which continues to go from strength to strength.

“We have a wonderful coaching set-up with more than 100 juniors receiving lessons every week as well as a thriving social tennis scene.

“We have juniors as young as six playing and even a lady aged 89 still swinging her racket every week.

“We now have more than 280 members, seven courts and a beautiful clubhouse.

“For those who like competitive tennis, we always put out as many teams as we can in the Sheffield and District League and they do really well.”
