Barnsley will play their first away game of the season at Wigan Athletic in the EFL Cup from 7.45pm tomorrow.
Both clubs began the League One season with home losses, Wigan going down 1-0 to Charlton a day after the Reds were humbled by Mansfield. They are both expected to make changes for this game.
Barnsley are expected to hand a debut to loan goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina while Georgie Gent could play after coming off after 25 minutes on Friday and Donovan Pines could ‘possibly’ return following surgery in March. Other young players could be given gametime.
Head coach Darrell Clarke said: “We want to win every game, that will never change. But also we have to look at players and give them opportunities to take their chance otherwise they never will.
“We haven't got a real big squad. It’s an opportunity for a few players. We want to win every game, we’re looking forward to it.”
Shaun Maloney’s Latics are expected by many to compete for the top six this season, having overcome financial problems which saw them docked points.
“They have some good young talent, a good manager and a good blend. They are one of numerous teams capable of threatening the top six.”
The Reds have won eight EFL Cup ties in the last 14 seasons. They are unbeaten in four meetings with the Latics.
