A COMBINATION of bad weather and antisocial behaviour has resulted in a community Christmas tree being removed.

It had been placed in the Horse and Groom Square in Goldthorpe but vandals had reportedly cut through the cable on the lights and removed the wooden chocks used to keep the tree stable.

The council’s Barnsley South Area Team had pleaded with those responsible to not target the tree otherwise it would be removed - but their pleas were not heard and it was taken away earlier this week.

Coun Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, told the Chronicle: “We are working closely with local officers from South Yorkshire Police regarding the issues with the Christmas tree at Horse and Groom Square in Goldthorpe.

“Unfortunately, a combination of severe weather and instances of antisocial behaviour have affected our ability to keep the tree in its original position.

“While the recent unpredictable weather has caused challenges, the persistent need to repair and secure the tree has required significant resources from our area team.

“Despite our best efforts to maintain the tree and ensure it was a festive focal point for the community, the situation has become unsustainable.

“The decision to move the tree has not been taken lightly, and we remain committed to working with South Yorkshire Police and other partners to address the issues we’ve encountered.

“Our goal has always been to bring joy to the community, and we will continue to explore ways to create a positive festive experience for residents while balancing the practical challenges we’ve faced this year.

“We thank the community for their understanding and support.”

It has been moved to the Renaissance Centre in Bolton-upon-Dearne.
