CAWTHORNE stunned Barnsley Woolley Miners on Sunday to reach the semi-final of the K3 Dental Cup, completing a good weekend after a crucial win in their relegation battle.

Cawthorne were 69 for five and 122 for seven at Shaw Lane, chasing 219, but former Yorkshire academy player Archie Greaves smashed 88 off 56 balls with five fours and nine sixes to secure the win with three balls left.

Michael Jepps and Greaves took three wickets each for Cawthorne and Boeta Beukes for Barnsley.

Captain Jepps said: “It’s very pleasing. It was a massive game against Barnsley and great to win it.

“I won the toss and bowled which I don’t normally do. There was moisture in wicket and we bowled them out for 74 last time. We were annoyed at letting them get 219. We dropped three catches.

“We looked right up against it but Archie played probably his best innings for Cawthorne. We know he can do it, it’s just about doing it more consistently. It was a brilliant innings. Some of the sixes were enormous at a big ground.”

Barnsley captain Liam Johnson added: “We had targeted that cup because we’re sponsored by K3 Dental and we joke that it’s our cup but we’ve never won it.

“We had eyes on it but sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say a piece of brilliance from the other side beat you.”

Cawthorne now host Castleford in the semi-final. Jepps said: “There are some really good teams left in it and we’re underdogs. On our day we can beat anybody. Castleford were the north division champions last year but our wicket is completely different to their’s. It will be a good day for the club and it’s the first time got this far. Hopefully it will be a good crowd.”
