Barnsley produced a good performance but were wasteful in front of goal in a 1-0 friendly loss to Spanish top flight side Real Mallorca on the final day of their pre-season training camp at Loughborough University.

Mallorca took an early lead but the Reds missed several clear-cut first half chances, including a penalty by Luca Connell.

Darrell Clarke rested a host of players who had been used in previous pre-season matches, including back three Josh Earl, Marc Roberts and Mael de Gevigney as well as Adam Phillips and Sam Cosgrove. Luca Connell returned to captain the side and played in midfield with new signing Matthew Craig as well as Jon Russell.

Callum Styles came on at half-time, playing at left wing-back and later taking the captain’s armband, and Donovan Pines played the last 15 minutes.

Mallorca, who finished 15th in La Liga last season and lost the Copa Del Rey final on penalties, had several internationals in their side including Pedrag Rajkovic who was Serbia’s goalkeeper against England in the Euros last month and Takuma Asano who netted in Japan’s win over Germany at the last World Cup.

Barnsley almost took the lead early on but Max Watters was denied by Rajkovic from point blank range after fine work on the right wing from the impressive Barry Cotter, who beat a man and played a fine throughball, then Fabio Jalo who crossed low near the byline.

Mallorca took the lead from a counter-attack with Asano applying the finishing touch from close range.

Barnsley could have replied almost immediately when Jalo burst into the box and was fouled. But Connell’s spot-kick was saved by Rajkovic then Russell hit the post from the rebound.

Connell was then played clean through as Watters flicked on a Cotter long ball but Rajkovic made a one-on-one save.

Russell nearly levelled early in the second half but shot wide from a tight angle on the right after he made a fine run from midfield and swapped passes with Kyran Lofthouse.

Jack Shepherd made a goal-saving tackle after Conor McCarthy lost the ball.

Trialist and substitute Mipo Odubeko was given the ball by a defender in the box but tackled by another.

Mallorca had a goal ruled out right at the end for offside, after the rebound was tapped in following a good save by Jackson Smith.
