DAN Jarvis has been elected as the MP for Barnsley North - doubling his majority.

The exit polls suggested he would lose his seat - but it was not to be.

He received more than 18,000 votes - almost 8,000 votes more than second-placed Robert Lomas.

He told the Chronicle: "I feel truly honoured to be elected to represent Barnsley North.

"My majority has doubled.

"I made a joke about the famous Mark Twain quote that 'reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated'.

"I think some people had written my political obituary at 10.05pm.

"It wasn't to be for those who wished it.

"We did run a strong campaign."
