A BOOK which has been 30 years in the making has finally been published.
Historians Neil Morris and Joshua Daniels - who penned ‘Private Memories: Letters of a Rotherham Soldier’ - came together to document the colourful life of the former’s uncle, Private Dennis Jones.
Dennis, from Masbrough, served in the Second World War after being enlisted at the age of 18 in 1943.
He first served in the York and Lancaster Regiment, before moving into the Essex Regiment.
Neil, from Bolton-upon-Dearne, said: “I discovered a written treasure trove after finding all of Dennis’ letters he sent during his time as a raw recruit in Richmond, North Yorkshire, to his deployment as warrior of war.
“He first went to Skegness, before moving to Lincoln, before finishing his training in Norfolk, ready to embark.
“Going overseas he first went to North Africa, and then, as part of the 8th Army, went to the Adriatic Coast in Italy.
“To commemorate the 80th anniversary of his death on January 10, 2024, we wrote the book based on the letters Dennis sent home during his service.
“I investigated the history of Dennis and Rotherham at the date of the letters, and Joshua provided historical context of the world and the UK at the time.
“We share a passion for local history and have worked on numerous heritage projects together, including documentaries and guided walks.”
The book will cost £7 and £3 from every sale will go to military charities, including The York and Regimental Archive in Rotherham.
