A FORMER Royal Air Force weapons technician turned sailor has been chosen as one of 12 skippers to lead a team in the 40,000 nautical mile Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race.

Roy Taylor, 47, born and raised in Kexborough, has spent the past decade as a sailing instructor in both the UK and Germany.

Most recently he has been working with young people from the Marine Society and Sea Cadets of the UK training brig the TS Royalist.

He will be at sea for about 11 months, departing from Gosport on England’s south coast. The route crosses the Atlantic to South America, then back across the South Atlantic to South Africa. After crossing the Indian Ocean they will then skirt the south side of Australia, and then around the Pacific rim up to China.
