DAVID Grant was ‘blown away’ by the talent of Barnsley’s young people when he gave a vocal masterclass at the Civic on Saturday.

The world-renowned vocal coach and TV talent show judge - best-known for his work as judge and vocal coach on the BBC One series Fame Academy - was in town to run a vocal workshop on behalf of Barnsley Music Service, based at he Civic.

“The level of talent was absolutely astounding,” David told the Chronicle this week.

“Normally when you get a group of 27 or 28, you would expect to get two or three really good singers, a number that are OK, and any number who are very keen and enthusiastic, but not really talented.

“What I found in Barnsley was entirely the opposite of that. The talent level was astounding, and the concentration level and worth ethic was amazing. They were all absolutely bang on it.

“I really was blown away. It made me think there really should be more of this.”
