TWO RARE birds that have made a return to a Barnsley nature reserve after a five year absence have been keeping visitors happy with their evening antics.

Two bitterns, a notoriously shy bird once near extinction in the UK, have been coming out of reed beds at Carlton Marsh nature reserve, located between Cudworth and Carlton, to put on a daily display of aerial acrobatics to catch insects - much to the delight of wildlife enthusiasts.

Bitterns became so scarce that in 1997 there were only about 11 breeding pairs in the country but since then a great effort has been put into creating some 1,500 hectares of new reed bed across the country for the birds to call home.
