BARNSLEY Council has issued an apology following a disruption to bin collections over the last week.

Bosses have said that due to the ‘sever winter weather’, most of the bin collections were not completed.

They have more than 115,000 collections scheduled each week, and they’ve asked residents to remain patient while they recover from the delays.

A spokesperson said: ” We’re sorry about this.

“It isn’t the standard of service that we want to provide, and we’re doing all we can to get back on track.

“This week, we’ll be focussing mainly on collecting your grey bins.

“Please leave your grey bins out.

“We might not collect them on your normal collection day, but we’re working to get around the borough.

“If your grey bin is scheduled for collection from Tuesday January 21, please do not put out any side waste, as we’ll not collect it.

“This was a temporary measure due to the weather impacts the week before last.”

Residents have also been asked to keep their recycling bins out although they are prioritising grey bins.

The council has also reiterated they are not prepared to risk the welfare of employees or the public.

A spokesperson added: “We understand that you might be frustrated by the disruptions.

“We’ve seen lots of comments about how our collections should be organised and how our staff should work.

“People’s safety is our priority, and we want to make sure all our employees go home safe at the end of the day.

“We are not prepared to risk the welfare of our employees or the public.

“This is why we launched the Be Safe, Work Safe, Target Zero initiative last year to improve safety and reduce waste collection vehicle collisions across Barnsley to a target of zero.”
