ALMOST 250 residents of Goldthorpe have signed a petition to stop plans for a scrap yard and motor salvage business being set up.
The residents gathered at a meeting at the Comrades Club last Tuesday evening to sign the petition which they hope will stop the transformation of the former Dairy Depot on Beever Street into a scrap business.
Organiser Lily Dorritt said she was pleased with the level of support gathered and she has now handed in the petition to Barnsley Council.
She said: “The meeting went OK. I got quite a lot of signatures from around Goldthorpe and those that didn’t sign those came to the meeting instead.
“I have 13 sheets with 18 signatures on each sheet. We are hoping that is going to be enough to make a difference. It’s now with the people in the planning department.
“We don’t want the scrap yard there because it will bring Goldthorpe down even further. A nice new primary school is being built just down the road and we think a scrap yard would bring a lot of big lorries to the area.”
Residents have also said that they fear the development would increase noise pollution.
London-based Maxis Trading Ltd are the applicants for the site.
