WHEN it was first mentioned some people said it just wouldn't work in Barnsley town centre - but Barnsley by the sea and its artificial beach has proved so popular it is staying put for longer.
Traders say there has never been an event that has created so much children's chatter and laughter in the town centre.
Tons of specialist play sand were used to create the beach on the former open market area next to the pedestrian precinct for children and adults to sit and play on.
As well as the beach there are deckchairs, entertainment and even donkey rides and buckets and spades are provided to encourage visitors to get artistic and play.
